My computer is older and the ads are just slowing things to a crawl. Most websites use soo much computer resources.  I'm afraid to upgrade to newer programs due to potential computer overload. Will adblocking programs work with most of the sweeps?  Which are the best?

Things I do/have done.
-defrag regular
-java updated
-adobe updated
-clean cookies regular
-ram upgrade to almost 2 gig
-regular ad/spybot checks
-virus scans
- nothing on auto update- all manual
- flash add-on off- only use as needed.

Any ideas please?   Might be time for a new laptop.

Thank.

Ya - missed that on the list - I have it on medium - depending in the site I make changes on the fly.
Things missed on the list.
-selective startup -  "msconfig".
- tea timer from spybot off.
- microsoft updates up to date

Maybe I should clarify - the computer is ancient-  8 or 10 years old-- xp , celeron m 1.6ghz, 1.87 GB RAM- (origionally 256K)-  I think I should be greatful it still functions with ANY of the new stuff.

Most of the Facebook pages either take forever to load, don't function properly or just plain lock up.
Cuisinart and SteamyKitchen  are also two problem sites - they are so nice to enter for multiple items though.

Thanks
Mark

I have to enter thru IE for the Steamy Kitchen and select FB sweeps, and my comp just turned 1 year old!  crazy tongue

Some COKE sweeps will only work in IE, while others will only work in Firefox. I could go on, but you get the gist - since it sounds like you covered all the bases, and are running as lean as possible, the only other thing I can think of is to try CHROME for those that just won't load/configure in either IE or FF - gl!!!  sunny

I've been using Chrome for years and I love it. It's much faster than IE or Firefox. And you can install an adblocker on it. I have run across some sweeps where I had to disable the adblocker for them to show up, but I haven't had a sweep that wouldn't work with this browser yet (knock wood).

kazar - if you can afford it, upgrade to a new computer with as much memory as you can afford. I spent $1,369 + tax (no monitor included) for a V3 Gaming Systems desktop that I had them advise me on specifically with respect to entering multiple sweepstakes every day. I gave them the details on what I was doing and that I needed a fast computer, and boy did they deliver. I am not recommending them one way or the other, just trying to be specific to be helpful. Keep in mind I ordered this in June of last year, so specs and prices of comparable systems could differ. (btw, the liquid cooling system has made this the quietest computer I've ever had)

The point? I was using an 8-year old buggy Dell Dimensions desktop running 2GB memory and Windows XP - once I bit the bullet and manually migrated to the new computer (Windows 7 doesn't give you an easy migration path), I reduced the time I was spending each day entering sweeps from 5.5-6 hours to 2.5-3 hours - massive savings, since I enter every day. The difference was unreal, and I'd spent 8 months using that old computer for entering sweeps, which means I had wasted 600 hours using the slower computer during that time (that's 75 8-hour work days).

You needn't get this exact system, but depending on how much time you're spending entering sweeps every day, it's worth your time to at least looking at this. Good luck  cheers

Oh yeah - when Firefox starts lagging on me, I go to TASK MANAGER and select PROCESSES

I then look for plugin-container {the Plugin Container for Firefox} and right click and select End Process.

This will crash ADOBE, so make sure you've finished any entries that need it or you'll be told you already entered/played the IW when you try to reload those pages.

lol, Amy, but really, time IS money!  cheers

btw, what Amy said is dead-on right - usually when opening multiple screens for a long period of time I'll notice Firefox beginning to lag a bit or behave a little differently - that's when I start the Task Manager, click on the Processes tab and 'end' firefox.exe ... after that, I run a version of CCleaner to get rid of all the temporary gunk left behind by Firefox and other processes, and once every 3 or 4 times I'll finally run Uniblue Registry Booster's Registry scan, to find and fix any problems that have cropped up similarly in my registry. Kind of like eating a whole box of that cereal featured on an older Saturday Night Live program, "Colon Blow" - fixes it right up! cheers

 pottytrain
Colon Blow – In a parody of high-fiber cereal ads (notably Total and its "how many bowls" campaign), an off-screen voice tells cereal eater Phil Hartman he will need 30,000 bowls of his usual cereal to equal the fiber content in a single bowl of Colon Blow. (Also promoted is Super Colon Blow, with fiber content equal to that of 2.5 million bowls of Hartman's regular cereal.) When the large numbers are quoted, a pyramid of the same number of bowls elevates Hartman into the ionosphere.

 laughing laughing laughing

I LOVED Phil Hartman - too bad he was on SNL after I stopped watching it  cry

kcmoviebuff - oh, I agree, time IS money, but I have PLENTY of time...  crazy tongue

I usually clear cookies/temp files, close FF & IE, then reboot a few times a day because I experience the "memory leak" effect if I have them open to long and pages start lagging/hanging up/refusing to render/submit after awhile.

My comp is only a year old, and is rather fast - it's an ASUS a7v8x-x, with a premium VISION AMD chip, and I figure if I have these problems, people with older comps must really go crazy!!!

Did a couple of small things that hepled with my internet speed.
-Router reboot and optimize.
-Direct internet line instead of wireless.
-had a trojan in my last scan that was attached to JAVA- helps explain some of the page loading issues.
